Yoga and Meditation Class Descriptions

Yoga

All of the yoga classes offered at Five Element are rooted in the tradition of ayurveda. The postures are sequenced and carried out in a way that balances the five subtle elements in the body (earth, water, fire, air and space). Practicing in this way ensures the health and resilience of the body.

In addition to the postures we also practice breath-work, Vedic chanting and meditation. We discuss yogic philosophy which deepens and enriches our purpose and intention as we do our personal work. Far from just a physical workout or a brief time of shutting out our worries, these classes offer the chance to move toward wholeness in a deep and real way.

Meditation

In these classes we will practice and explore the view of meditation according to the tradition of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism.  We will do this by exploring the general principles and techniques of what are known as the “6 Yogas of Naropa.”  The 6 yogas are powerful ways of entering and unlocking the secrets of the body by developing our somatic sense of listening and hearing what the body is telling us.  We will also explore the more traditional  aspects of meditation called “shamatha-vipashyana” and how they relate to the 6 yogas or “Meditating with the Body”.  There will be about a 15 minute introduction, a 45 minute practice session, and time for questions and discussion.  The classes are open to all, beginners and those with previous meditation backgrounds.  No prior meditation experience is required.
